Female Deathmoth appearance and behavior

Appearance: A giant black, white, and gray moth with a skull-like marking across its wings. It is much larger than the harmless male variant.

Behaviour: Female Deathmoths rest on walls and can aggro when approached or illuminated. The Boiler Room uses heat and Bug Spray Valve barriers; the Cave System asks for slow crouched movement past wall-mounted moths.

Threat scale: 5/5 — the score groups directory entries; the written threat label above remains the player-facing assessment.

Observed in: 2 documented routes in this guide set.

Where Female Deathmoths block the route

The skull-marked giant is the hostile female

The giant body and skull-like wing pattern make this a completely different encounter from the small gray male. It rests on walls and can react to approach or direct flashlight exposure.

If a guide uses one picture and one danger label for both sexes, the survival advice will contradict itself. The female requires space, stealth, and route control.

The thermometer is telling you when to turn around

A rising number is not atmosphere—it is your early warning. At 125°F, slow down and look for the route tool. At 140°F, the Hive is too close and the better route is behind you.

The red valve releases Bug Spray gas that controls the lane. Trigger it from the safe side, wait for the barrier, and cross without shining the flashlight into the moth.

The Level 5 Boiler Room walkthrough now labels the heat thresholds and Bug Spray Valve correctly.

Note de terrain

What to do when a Female Deathmoth is close

Read the warning before entering the lane, crouch, keep direct light off the moth, and use the red Bug Spray Valve when the Boiler Room route provides it.

01

Signe distinctif

A 125°F / 51.5°C reading means a female is nearby. A 140°F / 60°C reading means the Hive is very close and the safe decision is to leave that route.

02

Réaction immédiate

Stop at the cool side of the corner. Lower the light, crouch, and look for the red valve or another passage instead of advancing for visual confirmation.

03

Reset the encounter

Return to the last cool corner. If there is a Bug Spray Valve, activate the gas barrier and wait for the lane to clear before crossing.

Conseil coop

Female Deathmoth tips for co-op

Cross narrow sections one player at a time. One player watches the thermometer or valve while the others wait behind the last cool corner; several lights and footsteps make the approach harder to read.

What ends runs: Calling the red device a steam valve. It releases Bug Spray gas; planning around “steam damage” makes the actual barrier mechanic harder to understand.

Spawn and pressure points

These are route-level encounter notes, not a promise that an entity will always stand in one fixed spot.

Throughout the Boiler Room route

Hot corridors and the Hive approach

Thermometer readings decide whether to advance; the Bug Spray Valve provides a safe gap at blocked lanes.

Across the dark cave tunnels

Wall and ceiling resting points

Direct light and movement pressure turn a quiet passage into a chase.

Counter and escape

How to cross the Boiler Room and caves

Crouch, keep a wide gap, and do not shine the flashlight directly at the moth. In the Boiler Room, retreat at 140°F / 60°C and use a Bug Spray Valve when the route provides one.

Use these as a short reset checklist. They describe what we change before, during, and after the encounter—not a script to follow blindly.

Check 01

Boiler Room approach

Solo: Treat 125°F as a warning and 140°F as a hard retreat. Use the red Bug Spray Valve to form the barrier, then cross while the lane is controlled.

Co-op: The thermometer player calls exact readings. The others do not move past the cool corner until the valve player confirms the gas.

Check 02

Level 8 cave crossing

Solo: Crouch before the model fills the tunnel, angle the flashlight away from the body, and pass with a return path still visible.

Co-op: Move one at a time through the bottleneck. The next player waits until the first is completely clear.

Check 03

When the moth aggros

Solo: Do not keep pushing deeper. Break back toward the last safe turn or active barrier.

Co-op: The closest player retreats first. Everyone else holds the safe side instead of entering the same narrow lane.

Mechanics in practice

Thermometer, light, and Bug Spray Valve rules

In the Boiler Room, 125°F / 51.5°C warns that a female is nearby; 140°F / 60°C means the Hive is very close and the route should be abandoned. The red valve releases Bug Spray gas, not steam, and creates a temporary barrier.

125°F is the nearby warning

At about 51.5°C, a Female Deathmoth is close enough to change the route. Slow down and locate the valve or retreat.

140°F means the Hive

At about 60°C, do not continue looking for the entity. The Hive is near and that corridor should be abandoned.

The valve uses Bug Spray gas

The red valve creates a chemical barrier that gives the player room to pass. It is not a steam jet and should not be described as one.

Before entering another hot or narrow corridor

  1. What was the last safe temperature?
  2. Is the red Bug Spray Valve already active?
  3. Can each player retreat without meeting another player in the bottleneck?
Field FAQ

Female Deathmoth questions

Quick answers for the point where a broad rule needs a concrete next action.

Should I shine the flashlight at it?+

No. Direct light can aggro a Female Deathmoth. Keep the beam off its body while moving past.

What temperature is dangerous?+

125°F / 51.5°C signals a nearby female. 140°F / 60°C signals the Hive and is the point to turn back.

Can I spray it with the handheld can?+

The route solution for the giant females is avoidance and the fixed Bug Spray Valve barrier. Save the handheld collection logic for the small male moths.
