Make sure this is actually the step you are on. If an item or prompt is missing, backtrack one room and check the inventory first.
1. Understanding the Level 0.2 Map & Mechanics
Near the beginning of the level, you will find a framed blueprint on the wall labeled "Level 0.2 - General Plan of Renovation." Studying this blueprint is crucial for standard progression:
- The Blue Zone: Represents your current starting area (safe zone).
- The Red Zone: Denotes the active corridor maze, which is split into upper and lower pathing loops.
- The Gate Pairs: There are 5 doors on the upper level and 5 doors on the lower level. They are paired numerically (1 through 5).
- The Unlock Rule: You cannot open an upper door until you have navigated the lower corridors and unlocked its corresponding lower partner door first.
2. The Standard Path: Gate-Pairing & Entity Management
If you choose to run this level normally without clipping out of bounds, you must execute the gate-pairing sequence while evading two dangerous entities:
Entity 1: The Smiling Eye (笑魔)
These appear as floating, glowing grins in the pitch-black corridors.
* Standard Counter: Keep your flashlight equipped. When you spot a Smiling Eye, shine your beam directly at it. It will quickly vanish, allowing you to pass safely.
Entity 2: The Skin Peeler (切皮)
A fast, highly aggressive humanoid entity that roams the narrow hallways.
* Standard Counter: If you hear footsteps or metallic screeching, turn off your flashlight and duck into a side corridor. If it spots you, run immediately toward the nearest unlocked gate door.
Step-by-Step Gate Progression:
- Locate the first active lower corridor and progress through to find Lower Door No. 1. Interaction turns its indicator light green.
- Backtrack to the upper loop; Upper Door No. 1 is now accessible. Open it to proceed deeper into the maze.
- The Crouch Trap (Door No. 2): Near Door No. 2, overworld signs suggest you must crouch to get past the iron barricades. Our testing showed that you can actually walk straight through while standing up, saving valuable time.
- Repeat this process for Doors 3, 4, and 5. Once all indicator panels are green, the master exit gate in the starting room will unlock.
3. The Out-of-Bounds Ceiling Clip Exploit
If you want to bypass the entities entirely and complete the level without taking risks, you can exploit a geometry collision bug right at the starting area:
- Go to the electrical fuse box panel mounted on the wall next to the starting warning signs.
- Jump onto the small protruding ledge of the fuse box, then press your jump/climb input again to stand fully on top of it.
- Position your character model against the corner seam where the curved wall meets the flat ceiling panel.
- Aim your camera slightly upward at the seam, press forward, and spam your jump/crouch keys.
- If done correctly, your character model will clip through the ceiling collision layer.
Once you are above the ceiling panels, you can walk directly over the maze corridors. This exploit provides two massive advantages:
- Despawning the Skin Peeler: Climbing above the ceiling collision often causes the Skin Peeler's AI pathing to break. The entity will attempt to reach you vertically, clip through the lower map boundaries, and get permanently trapped in the void.
- The Smiling Eye AI Freeze: If you drop down from the ceiling directly behind a Smiling Eye, its trigger volume fails to initialize. You can shine your flashlight directly at it; it won't disappear, but it also won't attack or kill you.
4. Escaping to Level 6.1
Once all gates are paired and green, return to the main starting room. Pull the master exit lever. This action drops a heavy iron gate, locking the roaming entities (Guodao/Bone Thief) outside. Walk into the elevator shaft at the end of the corridor to drop down and safely load into Level 6.1 (LE6.1).
Escape the Backrooms Level 0.2 Guide: Ancient Path Door Puzzle Video
We use this as the quick “don’t make the same mistake twice” checklist. If your room, spawn, or prompt does not match the video, stop and check the normal route first—patches and co-op timing can make an old shortcut look tempting when it simply will not work.
Look around slowly before guessing. Props can hide chairs, switches, notes, and pickups; a second camera angle is usually faster than brute force.
Call out what was pressed, collected, or opened. It prevents the classic “we all thought somebody did it” reset.
On the Ancient Path, keep the switch count in voice chat and wait at the tunnel gate until everyone is ready. Cross together once the safe window opens.

Smiler
A roaming Smiler can appear on the Level 0.2 route inside Level 0.1.
Use the flashlight on its face from range and keep a retreat line open instead of walking into the fog to confirm it.
