Escape the Backrooms Male Deathmoth Entity Guide

Also known as: Male Moth

Male Deathmoths are the small harmless ones. They belong in a resource guide, not a danger guide: Bug Spray turns them into Moth Jelly used for Hotel progression and useful player buffs.

Male Deathmoth appearance and behavior

Appearance: A small gray moth, usually found hovering in groups. It is harmless and does not share the giant female model or behavior.

Behaviour: Male Deathmoths stay near their spawn area and do not attack. Bug Spray kills them and each usable drop becomes Moth Jelly.

Threat scale: 1/5 — the score groups directory entries; the written threat label above remains the player-facing assessment.

Observed in: 2 documented routes in this guide set.

Small gray moths are the harmless male variant

The scale difference is the quickest reliable clue. Male Deathmoths are small and stay in groups; they are not waiting to start a chase.

That is why combining both sexes into one threat card is misleading. The male is effectively a collectible-resource encounter once you have Bug Spray.

Hotel route

The jelly belongs to the key puzzle

Treat the spray and elevator as one objective. After a kill, pick up the drop immediately and keep the route back in mind instead of continuing an open-ended room search.

In co-op, one collector prevents the familiar problem where every player remembers seeing jelly but nobody knows who can complete the elevator exchange.

The Level 5 Terror Hotel walkthrough connects the Bug Spray, jelly collection, food elevator, and three-key route.

Field brief

How to collect Moth Jelly

Kill only the moth groups you need, collect the jelly, and return it to the food elevator or keep it for the route.

01

Recognition signal

Small gray moths hovering in a group are the harmless male variant. Do not confuse them with the giant winged female model.

02

Best immediate response

Use a short controlled spray, wait for the group to drop, and pick up the Moth Jelly before moving to another room.

03

Reset the encounter

There is no chase to reset. If the spray missed, line up again instead of emptying the can while turning.

Co-op note

Moth Jelly collection in co-op

Let one player spray and collect so the group does not waste several canisters on the same cluster. Call the jelly holder before returning to the food elevator.

What ends runs: Calling every moth a Deathmoth threat and sneaking past the small males, then reaching the Hotel elevator without the jelly needed for the keys.

These are route-level encounter notes, not a promise that an entity will always stand in one fixed spot.

During the Hotel key route

Hotel moth rooms

Moth Jelly goes into the food elevator and is exchanged for three keys needed to continue.

During the Suburbs route

Level 9 moth groups

The moths remain harmless; jelly is an optional sanity and speed resource rather than an enemy to evade.

Counter and escape

How to use Bug Spray without wasting it

Spray only long enough to kill the target group, pick up the Moth Jelly, and keep the can for the next group. Male Deathmoths cannot hurt the player.

Practical run notes

Moth Jelly route notes

Use these as a short reset checklist. They describe what we change before, during, and after the encounter—not a script to follow blindly.

Check 01

Hotel key route

Solo: Spray enough groups to supply the food elevator, collect each drop, and return by the route you already cleared.

Co-op: Name one jelly holder. Do not split the drops between players and then discover the elevator interaction is short one item.

Check 02

Preserving Bug Spray

Solo: Use the reticle and short bursts. Sweeping an empty room burns the resource with no improvement in safety.

Co-op: Only the closest player sprays; everyone else watches the corridor and confirms the drop.

Check 03

Optional Level 9 jelly

Solo: Take it if the sanity or speed benefit helps the next section. The moth itself does not force a detour.

Co-op: Call whether the group actually needs the buff before stopping the whole house route.

Mechanics in practice

What the harmless moth actually does

This is a resource encounter, not a stealth section. Use short controlled sprays, confirm the jelly drop, and return to the progression route instead of emptying the can into a room.

Male means harmless here

The small males do not attack. The hostile stealth advice belongs to Female Deathmoths.

Jelly advances the Hotel

Place the collected Moth Jelly into the food elevator to receive the three keys used by the Level 5 route.

Jelly is still useful later

Outside the required exchange, Moth Jelly can help sanity and movement. That makes an optional Level 9 group a resource choice, not a combat encounter.

After-action check

Before leaving the moth room

  1. Was every jelly drop picked up?
  2. Does one player clearly hold the Hotel progression items?
  3. Is there enough spray left for any remaining group?
